UNIFIL on alert for Israeli drills

United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon have intensified border patrols in response to Zionist regime's military exercises underway.

Lebanese troops in the area were also put on alert for the drills, according to the Lebanese military.

The heightened security came after the Zionist regime launched a five-day drill.

Zionist regime's deputy war Minister Matan Vilnai said the drills, which began on Sunday, was a derive to 'apply lessons' from its 2006 defeat against Lebanon in 33-day war.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora ordered the army to take necessary precautions to protect the Lebanese people during the drills, APTN reported

After meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Sunday, Siniora told a news conference he was against the Israeli drills.

"We have to stay alert, and I have asked the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) to be alert as to what is happening on our borders, so that Israel would not take advantage to intrude on our air space or to attack our soil," he said.

Siniora was in Cairo to discuss with Mubarak Lebanon's political crisis as well as the Israeli military exercises.
