Palestinian prisoner dies due to lack of medical care

Palestinian author and activist Walid Daqqa, who had been battling cancer, passed away at the Zionist regime’s Shamir Medical Center, as reported by the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs on Sunday.

Tehran, Qodsna - Daqqa, hailing from Baqa al-Gharbiyye, a predominantly Palestinian city within the Green Line, had spent 38 years in the regime’s prisons, according to the commission, which further asserted that his death was a result of a deliberate policy of neglect towards ill prisoners by the Zionist regime prison administration.

Daqqa was one of the most prominent and long-serving Palestinian detainees in the regime’s custody. He was arrested in 1986 for the killing of a Zionist soldier and had been incarcerated since then. During his imprisonment, he authored several books, including a children's story.

In 1999, he married Sana Salameh while behind bars. In 2020, he and his wife welcomed a daughter named Milad, who was conceived after his sperm was smuggled out of prison.

In 2022, Daqqa was diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a rare form of bone marrow cancer that disrupts normal blood cell production. Human rights organizations began advocating for his release on medical grounds.

Last year, Addameer, a group supporting Palestinian prisoners, stated that Daqqa urgently required medical attention, accused the Zionist regime’s authorities of denying him prescribed treatment, and called for his immediate release.

However, the Zionist regime declined to release him early, setting his release date for 2025.

Following news of his death, the Hamas movement pledged to continue its support for the prisoners until their freedom is secured. In a statement, Hamas mourned Daqqa and highlighted that "he died due to deliberate medical negligence in the occupation prisons."
