Iran- Saudi agreement
a huge development with global implications

Rodney Shakespear

Qodsna (Tehran) - Iran and Saudi Arabia have reached an agreement in the Chinese capital of Beijing to restore their diplomatic relations and re-open embassies and missions, seven years after their ties were broken off over several issues.

Speaking to Qods News Agency, British political analyst, Prof. Rodney Shakespeare talked about the major effects of this agreement on the Palestinian issue and the causes of the Zionist regime’s concerns regarding it.

Answering the question about the effect of the deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia on regional and international equations, especially in the Persian Gulf, he said:  This is a huge – and amazing – development with not just regional but global implications. Although the situation is at an early stage, possibilities include:

a) increasing isolation of American forces in Syria

b) an end to war and devastation in Yemen

c) Saudi membership of BRICS and Shanghai Co-operation Organisation and Eurasian union.

d) speeding up of moves to end the predominance of the dollar

e) issues relating to American bases in West Asia

f) massive moves from a uni-polar world to a multi-polar one

g) easing of economic pressure on Iran

The implications for Bahrain are not clear and China is making moves to become the world’s leading diplomatic power. Its Belt and Road Initiative is being furthered by this agreement, Shakespeare added.

Pointing to the causes of the Zionist regime’s concern about the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, he went on to say that the Zionist attempt to establish a broad West Asia coalition against Iran is now in tatters.

The agreement will not stop Israel making a military attack on Iran (Israel could fly over Saudi without asking permission) but it does make an attack more difficult, British political analyst noted.

The key point is that Israel is inextricably linked to the USA which is now losing world political, moral and economic leadership.

Ask about the impact of this agreement on developments in Palestine, he said: At first, it would not be wise to expect too much help for Palestine because an underlying problem is that the Saudi regime is fundamentally anti-democratic and the Palestine issue is essentially a democratic one. That said, there is now some possibility of tempering Israeli aggression and arrogance.
