Turkish government and lost sincerity over Palestine

Turkish government staged a conference in support of Palestine in Istanbul on February 25, four days after an international conference in support of the Palestinian intifada in Tehran.

Turkey surprisingly announced during the Istanbul conference it was supporting the liberation of the full extent of the historical Palestine from the Jordanian River to the Mediterranean Sea, causing questions to rise as to the true intention of the country in establishing strategic ties with the occupier Israel.

Iran however would welcome any move in support of Palestine but at the same time, equivocal stances are unwelcome in the Palestinian issue and would not prove useful to the problem. Probably it was the same argument that prompted some participants to protest against the conference’s agenda.

One more point of note in the conference was the demand of some Palestinian groups that the permanent secretariat of the conference be located in Lebanon rather than Turkey, showing the levels of mistrust in Turkey as a member of NATO and solid partner of Israel.

And, having considered the same solid ties, the conference proved to be ceremonial as its final statement called for resistance against Israel.

Some foreign groups who were present in Tehran’s conference and joined the Istanbul conference immediately after leaving Tehran say the Tehran’s conference was transparent and productive unlike the situation in the latter.

The Istanbul conference was also held in the absence of leaders of Palestinian groups, showing how little importance the groups consider for the conference.

Turkey’s double conduct is to blame.
