Israel to renew Adnan’s administrative detention

The Israeli Ofer Court was scheduled to hold a hearing Monday to renew Islamic Jihad leader Sheikh Khader Adnan’s administrative detention for six months, family sources said.

The sources pointed out that Sheikh Adnan declared a hunger strike a week ago protesting his renewed detention for the second consecutive time.

The Israeli Hadarim prison administration transferred Sheikh Adnan to solitary confinement and denied him meetings with his lawyer as a punitive measure following his declaration of hunger strike.

Sheikh Adnan was arrested during the Israeli summer offensive on Gaza, where he was held in administrative detention according to which hundreds of Palestinian prisoners are being held without charge or trial in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Khader Adnan has become a symbol of resilience and steadfastness after he waged a 66-day hunger strike against his previous administrative detention. He began his hunger strike immediately after his violent arrest by Israeli soldiers on December 17, 2011.

Adnan’s hunger strike, which eventually attracted international media attention and solidarity from around the world, inspired other administrative detainees to go on hunger strike to protest similar detention or to demand rights.
