Abbas unveiled a new status in UNGA

A senior Iranian expert in Middle East affairs approves the idea that the PA Head Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks in the UNGA meeting was contradictory to his previous positions however he says Abbas may have actually adopted a genuine stance due to the post-Gaza-war developments in the Palestinian issue.

Head of the Strategic Studies Center, Amir Mousavi told Qudsna that the 51-day war on Gaza was actually a destructive, inhuman war to the extent that it also affected Abbas emphatically.

The analyst said Abbas may also be motivated by his new reconciliation agreement with Hamas that was concluded a day before he makes his UNGA speech. Mousavi elaborated that the agreement almost cedes the Gaza control to Abbas, adding that the UNGA speech may have aimed to pave the way for a smooth restoration of PA authority over Gaza.

Mousavi also suggested that Abbas was motivated by a shift in the Arab states’ position towards the Palestinian issue. The analyst argued that for the first time in the Palestinian history, the Arab nations declined to protest Israeli when it unleashed its genocidal war on Gaza, apparently due to the impact of the roaming ISIL current.

“Abbas therefore felt he has lost his position among the Arab nations besides his legitimacy in the Palestinian community. He sought to define and find a new status in the Palestinian political stage by making the remarks,” Mousavi said.
