Israel, a house over water pillars

Qudsna, Ahmad Kazemzadeh:

Thursday, May 15, 2014 was the 66th anniversary of the occupation of Palestine. The day is called Nakba by the Palestinians while Israelis dub it 'Independence Day.'

66 years ago Zionists unleashed some 44 mass killings in a bid to force the Palestinians to leave their historical land. 750 thousand Palestinians left their homes behind prompted by the fear of being massacred. The Palestinian population at the time was one million.

Prior to the Nakba day, Zionists only held one sixth of the Palestinian land whereas they take the control of some 78 percent of the historical Palestine following the massacres and mass expulsions.

In 1882, the Jewish population of Palestine was only 22 thousand while Arabs were 900 thousand. In 1948, the number of Jews was 650 thousand. They are now 8 millions.

I'd like to enquire as to what extent the Zionists could realize their original objectives after 66 years of occupation. If one considers the Zionist goal of destruction of the Palestinian identity as a major parameter, the answer would be the Zionist project has totally ended up in failure as the 750,000-strong population of Palestinian refugees in the 1948 war has now grown to over 6 million that is one hundred percent in growth per every decade.

Moreover, those Palestinians who remain in the occupied Palestine and numbered only 165,000 in 1948 have now grown to over 1.6 million, making one fifth of the total population of the Israeli-occupied Palestine. This has turned into a major source of security concern for the Zionist regime. The regime actually seeks a 'Jewish country' label for the faked 'Israel' partly due to the security concern.

The security concern would all the more concerning for the regime in light of the dwindling rate of birth among the Zionists compared to Palestinians as the latter's birth rate is two times the former. The regime also may no longer rely on absorbing Jews from across the world as the reserves have come to an end. Many settlements in the occupied Palestinian West Bank have remained empty as there are no occupants to take them.

The regime has also failed its talks with the Palestinian Authority. The talks have actually been designed to let the regime to merge with the regional fabric of nations. The talk failure has dealt a double blow to the regime pushing it into further isolation and a precipice South African once suffered during the era of Apartheid.

The Zionist army too has no more favorable standing. The army that was once a symbol of honor for Israel has lost its previous aura due to its defeats in the 33-day war in Lebanon in 2006 and the 22-day war in Gaza in 2008.

The regime has now resorted to instigating crises in the regional countries, especially in Syria as a new project to shore up its shaky security. That is to buy security by making others insecure.

The regime appears to have set up a house over water pillars during the past 66 years.
