Lieberman : Israel must reoccupy Gaza

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Wednesday that Israel should retake the Gaza Strip, in response to a earlier barrage of rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, local media reported.

Lieberman made the remarks in an interview with Channel 2 news.

On Wednesday afternoon, Islamic Jihad forces in Gaza fired at least 90 rockets at southern Israel in response to the Israeli killings of six Palestinian civilians in the past few days.

The firing operation, codenamed 'breaking of silence' by the force came just hours after British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived on his first official visit to the region since taking office in 2010.

"In my opinion, as it is known, there is no alternative to retaking the Gaza Strip," Lieberman said.

"I will oppose any and all limited exercises of force other than retaking Gaza and bringing an end to this rocket fire once and for all," he said.

The rocket firing once more showed how the much-touted Israeli Iron Dome would fail in intercepting Palestinian rockets.

Palestinians are mourning the martyrdoms of six of their compatriots at the hand of the Israeli forces. Saji Darwish, a Palestinian student, was shot in the head by Israeli forces near Ramallah late Monday. He died of his injuries.

Earlier in the day, Raed Ala'eddin Nafe' Zeiter, a 38-year-old Palestinian-Jordanian judge, was killed at the Allenby Bridge crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan. And on Tuesday, three Palestinian fighters were killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.

In a statement in Arabic, Palestinian Authority spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh warned the "latest Israeli escalation can lead to the situation spiraling out of control". Netizens echoed this statement, many believing a third intifada, or uprising, could take place soon.

Others pointed to an Amnesty International report, published last month, that called Israeli forces "trigger happy" and said Israel was using "excessive violence" in the occupied West Bank.
