Damasuc is not Belgrade

Renowned Arab political expert Abd al-Bari al-Atwan says in an article that the US and Zionist regime would rather realize before an assault on Syria that Damascus is not Belgrade in former Yugoslavia as Moscow is not the then Moscow.

"Moscow is stronger than past," he wrote, adding that the US has already started to lose its grip on world power.

Atwan castigated the Arab League for playing into the hand of the world colonialists and serving the western interests. "Unfortunately, Obama takes pride in having such stooges in the league. The league has turned into the main gate of US military intervention in other Arab countries," he regretted.

As for the US claims about a chemical attack in Syria, Atwan said the US actually fears that Israel would be a target of a chemical attack, either by the Syrian government or other groups.

The political expert said the US never feel responsible for human rights issues "rather it only seeks to guarantee the safety and security of Israel."

The author questioned the US silence towards Israeli attack on Lebanon in 1982 and its carnages in Gaza, asking why the country has become too catholic than pope in case of Syria.

He said the US seems to have decided to repeat its Kosovo assault this time in Syria, however Damascus is not Belgrade.

He said Russia would respond this time while Syria for its part is prepared to respond to any US attack. Atwan suggested that Syria would target Israel, adding that senior Iranian authorities have warned that a war on Syria would trigger destruction of Israel.

The political expert said the so-called "limited" US war would trigger a regional and, likely, an international warfare that would start countdown to fall of the American empire.
