A group of Palestinian and Syrian youth is preparing to unfurl the largest Palestinian flag in history in Damascus to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (Catastrophe) of the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes by Israeli military forces in 1948.
Adnan Abu Nasser, head of the Palestinian friendship committee in Syria said on Saturday that the flag would be 232 by 117 meters, or a total area of 27,000 square meters. Each square meter stands for one of the 27,000 square kilometers of historic Palestine.
The United Nations estimates that 726,000, or 75% of the Arab population of Palestine, became refugees in 1948.
